I shotgunned the new Scott Pilgrim anime last night at work and I ended up liking but not loving it. The (non-spoiler) problem is that this is the SECOND SEASON of the show without having given us the first season. They‘ve basically assumed that you’ve read the books or watched the movie. It doesn’t allow for newcomers who will know that the end of the first episode is “wrong”. It also doesn’t give a damn about anyone who was hoping for/expecting an anime to give them a more faithful adaptation of the source material. They had one shot at this and decided “let’s flip our own script”.
None of this is condemnation. If you’re a fan of Scott Pilgrim, go watch this series. If you’re forewarned, I think you’ll really dig this. But, I went into it expecting something familiar to be presented in the medium in which it should always have been presented. It’s a shame that the series I just watched means I will now NEVER get that original story presented in this way.
Just like your parents, I’m not mad… I’m just a bit disappointed.
