Here are some recent interviews I’ve done…

With the Heroes of Homeroom C Kickstarter underway, I’ve been lucky enough to be interviewed for a few different podcasts.  I thought I would share them with you here on the site.  Or at least links to them…

First up, I made another appearance on my favourite podcast, An Elegant Weapon, hosted by Jason Clark.  We talk HoHC, The F1rst Hero, Alpha 1 Wrestling and much more.  Check out Episode 226 of the show at http://anelegantweapon.ca/?p=67

Then there’s Derek Becker’s Comic Pro & Cons.  Becker and I spoke on Episode 55 of his podcast and that show can be found at http://www.comicprosandcons.com/episode-055-anthony-ruttgaizer/

And finally, I woke up at a god awful early time (anything before noon is a sin) last Sunday to speak with the very friendly folks at All Things Good and Nerdy.  This show runs LIVE on Sunday mornings and features a video element.  I decided NOT to appear on video because a) I didn’t feel like cleaning the section of the apartment directly behind me and b) I was Donald Duck’ing it.  You know what I mean…  Shirt but no pants.  Either way, we had a lot of fun chatting.  Watch/listen to that interview at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=djDzCv3OGGk

Thoughts on the American Election

Clinton

Yes, Mrs Clinton, it is.  And if America had abolished the “Electoral College” decades ago, as it should have, your message would carry weight. But instead, winning the Popular Vote by an 800,000 ballot margin will have to be cold comfort for you. In the meantime, a large part of that American Dream is now being entrusted to a man to blew a dog whistle into the ears of white supremacists, xenophobes, misogynists, and religious zealots while telling everyone else that he was the cure to what ailed them. He’s not just a snake oil salesman… he is the very snake oil he was selling.

I, on the other hand, couldn’t narrow my focus when assessing Trump. An American friend said he didn’t understand the FEAR of Trump. I tried to explain it a little but don’t know how well I did. The fear is because the social climate in America has changed in the wake of this election. It’s easier to call Muslims terrorists. It’s easier to call Mexicans criminals. It’s easier to call Blacks uneducated. It’s easier to call transgender people perverts. Gays, lesbians, Jews… It’s easier to marginalize anyone who isn’t a white Christian today because that was part of Donald Trump’s path to victory.

Some people, I’m sure, voted for Trump because they honestly believed that that’s the level of change that was needed. I’m not worried about those people.  Disappointed but not worried.  The real problem is that making Trump the new “leader of the free world” tells too many bad people that they’ve been right about their insane ideas all along. It’s going to make them bolder about expressing their hate. And that’s going to get people hurt. It’s going to ruin lives in many big and small ways.

I don’t personally have to worry about getting a safe and legal abortion or having my marriage to my same sex partner invalidated or be sent back to my war-torn homeland, but I worry for those who might.

I’m also worried about the people who would kick a disabled kid’s wheelchair at a political rally. The guy who would chant “Jew-S-A” on camera. The guy who would lean into a car window and tell a black man that “black lives don’t matter” and “we should’ve sent all you n—-rs back to Africa after slavery” while also chant “Trump! Trump! Trump!”  Or the woman who stopped my Detroit postal worker friend the day after the election to taunt him about Trump winning. I’m worried about the people who spray paint “Go Trump” on the black church they are burning down.  and the now-hundreds of other incident of racial aggression that took place during and after the election cycle that have Donald Trump’s name attached to them.

I’m worried that if I continue visiting the United States, I’ll end up getting into an altercation with some redneck Klansman or hateful old woman or napoleon-complex cop or drunken frat boys. That might be a one in a million chance. But who wants to win that lottery? Why would I even buy a ticket?

With that said, a few nights ago, I had to book a flight to San Francisco for January. I have an obligation to my Mother to spread a portion of her ashes into the Pacific and the weekend I’m going will be the first anniversary of her passing. After that weekend, I WILL NOT BE RETURNING TO THE UNITED STATES. I don’t want to have problems. I don’t want to get into fights. I don’t want to be afraid. I DON’T WANT TO FUCKING DIE.

Even if, beyond all logic, President Trump makes the American economy the strongest it’s ever been, the damage this election cycle has done to society itself is horrifying.

Capsule Review: Ghostbusters (2016)

GB2016banner

Did anyone notice that the Ghostbusters reboot reviews itself at the end of the movie? (This isn’t really a spoiler, so calm down, nerds) The four principals are standing on the roof of the Hook & Ladder looking at the lights of Manhattan. Abby says “Well that’s not terrible.” and Erin replies “No it’s not. It’s not terrible at all.”

And that, my children, is probably about the best, most honest review this movie could have.

Ghostbusters-2016Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate MacKinnon as the new Ghostbusters.

Four really amazing actresses, solid supporting cast, terrific visuals, mildly entertaining but mostly unexceptional film. Too much cutesy “aside” dialogue (ie: silly train-of-thought side conversations). Too many pointless cameos used almost purely as fan service. (Even Ozzy Osbourne’s cameo is wasted.) Not enough service to the emotional connection they professed between the two main characters. (maybe the movie would have been better served by opening with flashbacks to them as kids with Erin’s childhood ghost encounter, their friendship forming and later dissolving.)

StayPuft2016Seeing Stay Puft again was pretty cool.

And yet, like both the movie and I said… it’s not terrible at all. Just not as good as I was hoping.

Help SAVE The F1rst Hero!

Hey kids!

You may have noticed that I’ve been fairly quiet for the last couple of days in terms of social media presence and, in particular, publicizing the Kickstarter campaign for my comic book series, THE F1RST HERO. That’s because there’s been an unfortunate development with the book.

Due to low pre-order numbers, Diamond Comics cancelled distribution of the series before the scheduled release of Issue 2 of the WEDNESDAY’S CHILD story arc. They informed our publisher, Action Lab Entertainment, of this decision earlier this week and I was informed on Thursday evening.

So, what does this mean for Volume 3? I’ve spent the last 48 hours mulling over the options.

I still believe in THE F1RST HERO. I still believe in the story I’ve written and in the art that Marco Renna and Fred Stresing have created. I still believe that we’ve put together something exciting that deserves to reach an audience. More than anything else, I still want to bring this book to everyone.

So I’ve decided to let all of you decide.

If the Kickstarter reaches its funding goal of $4000 CDN (approx $3000 USD), we will finish the book. Every dime of the money this Kickstarter raises will be going into production, printing and shipping. Any costs not covered by the Kickstarter will come out of my pocket, but we need to hit that $4000 goal for production to continue past this point.

Without mass distribution to comic shops, the only way to get printed copies of WEDNESDAY’S CHILD will be directly from us. If the Kickstarter succeeds, we can and will get this story into your hands. I’m still hopeful that we can reach and surpass the $4000 goal and make everyone proud that they contributed their hard-earned cash to make this dream into something real.

So please, share this announcement and the campaign with your friends. The more people who get involved, the better our chances of saving the book. And now more than ever before, if you are considering making a pledge, please visit the Kickstarter page and help support THE F1RST HERO!

THE F1RST HERO is a 100% creator-owned series. This Kickstarter campaign is being conducted to help raise funds for the production of the series. After Kickstarter’s fess and the cost of reward fulfillment, all the money raised will go towards those costs. Marco, Fred and I have been working incredibly hard to bring you the truly best book that we can and every dollar that you pledge here will help us reach the finish line. With that in mind, we would like to THANK YOU in advance for your support.

The risks for backing this project are incredibly minimal. Marco has completed the art for all four issues of the story and Fred has already completed colouring and lettering for Issues 1 and 2. Fred is currently colouring Issues 3. Issue 1 was published on June 15th and Issue 2 has gone to the printers. The team at Action Lab have been great, once again, at helping us continue bringing the story of THE F1RST HERO to readers like you and the first wave of rewards will go in the mail almost immediately upon completion of the campaign. Trade paperback collections will be mailed out in late-October to complete the reward fulfillment cycle.

Reward packages for this Kickstarter include:
DIGITAL COPIES of the first issue or the entire 4-issue story arc
PRINT COPIES of the Special Convention Edition of Issue 1
TRADE PAPERBACK collections of the complete 4-issue story arc
COMMISSION SKETCHES and special SKETCH COVERS drawn by series creator Anthony Ruttgaizer
TRADE PAPERBACK collections of Volume 1 and Volume 2 of the series
SCRIPT CONSULTATION SESSIONS with Anthony to help turn YOUR ideas into comic book scripts
SPEAKING ROLES as a character in an issue of the series!

Even if you can’t contribute, you can help make this project successful by telling your friends and neighbours about it.
